The Shalom Model United Nations (MUN) 2024, hosted at Shalom Presidency School in Gurugram on August 9th and 10th, was a grand assembly of intellect and diplomacy. This landmark event, meticulously organized by the Shalom Group of Schools under the visionary guidance of our Sherpa & Vice Chairman - Mr. Dennis George, gathered 495 bright young delegates from prestigious schools across the state, providing them with a platform for critical discussions and innovative solutions to global challenges.
The opening ceremony was nothing short of captivating, beginning with an exquisite classical dance performance that infused the event with a sense of grace and tradition. The spotlight then turned to the esteemed chief guest, Major Dr. Mohammed Ali Shah, whose address left an indelible mark on all present. Drawing from his extraordinary life of courage and empathy, Major Shah shared a riveting personal story where he narrowly escaped death— not through might, but through the profound power of dialogue and understanding. His tale resonated deeply, offering delegates not just a lesson in diplomacy, but a vivid reminder of the transformative impact that empathy and collaboration can have, even in the most perilous situations. It was a moment that left everyone with much to reflect upon, perfectly setting the stage for the intense discussions that were to follow.
At the heart of Shalom MUN 2024 were its diverse and dynamic committees, each entrusted with addressing some of the most pressing global issues of our time. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) grappled with the Syrian civil dispute, striving for pathways to peace and stability. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) turned its focus to the militarization of the Arctic, balancing concerns of global security with those of environmental preservation. Meanwhile, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) delved into the vital issues of enhancing women's political participation and combating sexual exploitation. Other committees, including the All India Political Parties Meet (AIPPM), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), International Court of Justice (ICJ), and International Press, tackled topics ranging from national border reforms and strategies to combat El Niño to the role of media coverage in shaping public opinion. Each of these discussions contributed richly to the success of the event, showcasing the delegates' intellectual rigor and diplomatic acumen.
The grand closing ceremony of the Shalom Model United Nations was a vibrant and heartfelt celebration, beginning with a warm welcome by the exceptional Shalom comperes. Our Sherpa, Mr. Dennis George, delivered a thought-provoking address, motivating students to remember that true education extends beyond mere knowledge, emphasizing the importance of kindness, empathy, and nurturing the body, mind, and soul. The evening honoured the Conveners, Faculty Advisors, Board of Directors, Executive Board, and Secretariat for their outstanding contributions, followed by an electrifying Western dance performance by SHIS students. The ceremony reached its peak with the award distribution, where KR Mangalam was crowned Best School Delegation. Secretary-General Ms. Renitha Samuel’s inspiring speech and a nostalgic behind-the-scenes movie rounded off the event, leaving everyone with a profound sense of achievement and a shared commitment to the values discussed. The evening was a perfect culmination of an unforgettable MUN conference, etched in the memories of all who attended.
Shalom MUN 2.0 will be remembered as a milestone event that not only tested the limits of young minds but also nurtured the global leaders and diplomats of tomorrow, equipping them with the skills and insights necessary to navigate an increasingly complex world.
